Blog posts moving

we are consolidating blogs and sites.  We will now be blogging at http://coburnfamilyoffive.blogspot.com/ and the family site with links and pictures is at http://family.coburncraft.com

Turi's site and the Twins site will remain up for any reason that someday we may want to put something up individually (maybe they will take them over as soon as they learn to type) but for now, we will not be updating them individually.

Cosleepers

We don't get long stretches of sleep yet. But these two girls are cute little snugglers.

So far our schedule is 10pm, 11pm or 12am, 2am, 3am, 5am, Turi up about 7am and the girls keep right on eating at 8am or 9am.

Two weeks

The girls are two weeks old now. At their check up on Friday we learned that Piper had gained 2oz above birth weight and grown 1.25". Rowann has gained 5oz and grown 1".

Both girls' measurements all fall within the 10th-25th percentile. They are small, but that is expected of twins.

Dad is trying to take care of the house and meals, mom is trying to handle at least two kids at once, and grandma Lisa is on backup with the third kid for now and helping us get organized to manage on our own.

Rowann spent a good hour or more this morning watching her brother and studying this crazy world. Piper has settled down a lot and has been doing a lot of solid sleeping. Both girls and Turi have a cold. :(

All in all we are progressing well and are excited (rather than overwhelmed) for the days to come.

All is quiet

Grandma is sneaking a chance to write a note. Jess is sleeping with the girls. They have been lasting longer times between feedings so they seem to be getting lots of milk and are very happy. This will give Jessica a much needed break for fun things like naps and showers. Thom and Turi are out shopping. They are looking for a good walkie talkie system that will help with the communication between the three floors of our townhouse. Each day the girls and Jessica get stronger so maybe soon they will be able to spend more time out of the bedroom. But for now, the walkie talkies will really help.

Piper helped Grandma do some chores while Rowann had some lunch. After that Grandma had both girls in the wrap while Thom napped with Turi and Jessica got a shower. She taught them how to play bridge on the computer :-)

Stopping to smell the roses

Things are pretty much the same day by day here. Grandma and Mom get to stop to smell the roses at least 20 times a day...and often more. Every now and then Dad gets a smell too. Piper has been learning to manage her hands and can grab two fingers at once and direct them to her mouth. Rowan has preferred less playing time and more time for eating.
Both girls got to go out with big brother and Mom to the park yesterday. Sorry we don'y have more exciting pics of the girls today...more soon.

Self reliant?

Hardly. But we were left on our own for a couple of hours today and I managed a tandem diaper change/EC, a double latch on, free hands and a little R&R! Plus a self portrait and blog post via BB!

I wouldn't want to be on my own for too long at this stage. We did start to fall apart after 3 hours.

Home with NAMES and little personalities!

Meet Piper Lorraine (previously known as baby A or Apple) and Rowann Gale (previously known as baby B or Berry).

They were welcomed home by Turi on Monday and everyone has been settling into the new routines. The girls lost some weight at first, but they have turned the corner and started gaining. They visited the doctor today and have passed all their tests and everyone seems to be healthy. The learning curve on nursing is going well and we are learning the art of tandem diaper changing, nursing, and napping. Both girls seem to smile in their sleep a lot. Piper likes to be a little more awake than Rowann to smile, stare and chat. It is probably because she is the older sister.

Piper is the one on the left by the green bear and Rowann is on the right with her pink bear.

New arrivals

Apple was born at 1013am at 5.25#s
Berry was born at 1014am at 6.00#s

Please hold all calls and picture requests for a few days. We have a lot of things to adjust to and even grandma Lisa has enough going on that she can't be on the phone all the time.

Thank you all for your well wishes and your understanding!

37 weeks and 3 days!

Just a few more short days until our scheduled d-day!

We had a doctor visit today, and though I have been doing everything in my power to encourage movement (sifting, yoga, massage, baths... laying upside down!) miss Apple is still breech.  So the current plan is to head to the cutting table on Friday morning, but they will do one last scan at that time and if the girls have turned into position, we won't need to cut.  Everything else is going well with the pregnancy, and through more rigorous work to get apple to move, I have discovered that I can relieve a lot of the pressure and gain mobility by doing some of the yoga and other things to encourage the girls to move around a little.

We will be posting their beautiful pictures soon and welcoming them into this world one way or another! We are pretty excited over here!

36 weeks +

We had a doctor visit today and the girls are still not cooperating.  Apple is still breech and Berry is moving around like a crazy babe... is she hogging all the swim lanes?

I am starting to put on some serious weight, gained 4 pounds in 6 days since the last DR visit!  Must be because my momma got here and started cooking and lightening my workload.  I'm not worried to add the weight, I wanted to add it at the end so that I would have more milk resources when the girls come.

No other news to report, we are still headed for c-section unless Apple turns around.  We have 10.5 more days til the girls are born unless she flips (or if I go into labor).  It is weird to know when they are coming....

Happpier times!

The girls moved around a bit and I am feeling less tired.  Saturday and Sunday I had a hard time just standing up and walking to the next room.  But yesterday and today I have been back to able to go from floor to floor and room to room as long as I don't abuse it.  I am so glad that my mom is in town to help with Turi and the household things.  I don't know where I would be without the help!

We also had a good visit with our OBGYN today.  He is much more reasonable, much less jerklike, and presents options that make more sense to Thom and I than our perinatologist did last week.  He feels that taking the babies out at 36-37 weeks is too early and we unnecessarily risk them being underdeveloped.  He is proposing 38 weeks as the end date and much more positive and encouraging about the ability of Apple to turn around and the possibility of a natural birth.  We also have two more visits with him before the end date of August 6th so we have more time to monitor the girls position and see how the end is progressing.

So we are progressing well towards having two wonderful new girls in the family.  We will just have to be a little more patient and calm when we get comments from people about what we should or shouldn't be doing and how ready to pop I am and other comments related to the birth and care of the twins.  (I am getting a little cranky and sensitive I admit, I try to remain calm).  The girls will come when it is time!

35 weeks

So I look tired, I feel tired.  My girls and I are starting to feel like the words "bed rest" are a good thing.

The girls are still looking and measuring healthy.  Apple is ~4#9oz and Berry is ~5# so their discordance is less and makes the doctor happy.

However, we had a stressful talk because he sprung on us that he believes that we should head to c-section by Friday (7.23).  Let me be clear.  There is nothing to worry about.  He is a specialist in charge of watching for signs of stress and problems through ultra sound, he is not our OB-GYN, and he has found no signs of stress or any problems.  He is simply making the recommendation based on his opinion of when MoDi twins suffer from the least risk during delivery.  This is a highly contested issue among health professionals, so we are waiting until Monday to call and talk to our OB-GYN to get his opinion and view point. We may have twins soon, or maybe not for a few more weeks... we need more information.

34 Weeks

Much more tired this week.  Not nearly as much fun.  My savior arrives via plane tomorrow!  I feel a lot of individual limbs, hands, feet, heads moving around across my belly.  Unfortunately, I am not sure which appendage is what!  :)

33 weeks and feeling fine!

**I'm having technical difficulties with this post.  Don't know what is going on... bare with me.  Sorry**

I feel like there are a lot of things to update this week, so let me see if I remember them all...

We went to the doctor on Thursday and asked about the 1# difference in weight, they said no worries. It is on the larger side of normal, but still normal and they are getting an 8 out of 8 score on everything they test and look for... so the doc is very happy with their health.

The girls are still in a different position every time we peek, they each apparently have a large swimming pool to move around in so they will continue to move a lot for a while longer (amniotic fluid level is good and high).

My energy level, heartburn, ability to sleep, # of braxton hicks, and aches and pains all seem to change regularly depending on the girls positions. Though I must boast that of all the solutions I have tried for sleep over the past few months, the other night I put a thick sleeping bag under the top of my mattress to boost it a little into a recline... and I got the best nights sleep I've had in over a month if not two. I felt great this morning.

My thyroid is testing normal and I have been able to change my diet back to something a little more normal! YAY!!! Dairy and wheat are still big no nos, and peppers seem to give me heartburn more than just baby position... but tomatoes and potatoes are back! Yay I can eat so many tasty yummy things now and my diet is almost back to normal!! I decided the "avoid dairy" advice is good, but it does not say to never ever eat it, so once a month pizza date is my plan! And tomorrow is the date, and I might add pudding to the menu since it is a tradition for the fourth of July to have blueberries, strawberries, and pudding layered for red white and blue.

I could go on ecstatically about tomatoes forever, so I just really want to make it clear and I REALLY REALLY happy that tomatoes are a good food for me once again. You just can't imagine how blue I was Jan-June and how very happy I am now! Yay tomatoes! We should have planted more :)

32 weeks!

We had ultrasounds yesterday, but the pictures did not come out because both the girls faces were hidden by other things.  Darn those internal organs for needing some space.

What we learned is that Apple is now 3lbs and Berry is 4lbs (in utero names, don't get too attached).  They are back to a 25% difference in weight and the doc seemed to think that Apple was unusually small.  But he found no problems, both healthy.  He recommended that I get more rest...  In two weeks and one more day my savior will be here and I will try to get more rest and eat more 'til then.  Both yesterday and today I managed good naps! Hooray.

Apple is still breech but they are moving around constantly and I have a massage included as part of our doula package that can be used to turn and position the girls before labor.  Hopefully we will still be able to have a natural birth.

31 weeks

I'm feeling a lot of braxton hicks these days, having more difficult sitting up from laying and standing up from sitting, feeling like a big immovable object, and really tired of wearing the same old clothes just because they are the only ones that fit and keep me cool in the weather... so today I am feeling pretty in a skirt.

30 Weeks - Starting to slow down

My Thyroid has gone the other way now, from overactive to underactive.  This may be the cause of my extreme fatigue this week, I've also had a cold, or it could be that I am big and growing a lot and I'm just going to keep being tired.  I hope it is one of the first two and the fatigue dissipates!

Click the collage above to see a larger picture of how I've grown over 6 week.

29 Weeks

So last weekend I had my first experience of overdoing it a little and having to spend the evening sitting and resting with my feet up while others did my fetching and tasks. It was very difficult to rest for sure when we had guests at the house and even when it was just Thom and I, I didn't like to have to ask him to get me things when I would usually just stand up and get them myself.  I am paying good attention to not overdoing it again.

Here are this weeks pictures, and see Turi's Blog to see a cute one with him

Also, here is a pic of me from the back because people are commenting that if you see me from behind, you wouldn't even realize I was prego... well I say I am wider than normal, but not wider than a normal person...

What we learned today

We had another ultrasound today.  The girls have both flipped so their noggins are next to each other and they are mind melding :)  They can do that for awhile, but not too long! I am hoping that with yoga and masage we can have baby A back in the vertex position by the time of  delivery.

We couldn't get a shot of baby b today but the baby a shot looks better than most we have of her.
The girls are starting to even out in size. They used to have about a 24% difference in weight, and now only 14%.  Twin A is about 2lb 3oz and Twin B is about 2lb 9oz.  So it sounds like they are on track for the start of the third trimester.

I am starting to notice braxton hicks, though now that I have identified them again, I think I have been getting these subtle practice contractions for a few weeks now (which is completely normal and no one should worry!)  It is simply a shortness of breath and the belly tightening up so far.  I just forgot about these early easy contractions from my pregnancy with Turi, but I got several with him and am expected to have more with twins.

I am squarely in the third trimester and looking at another three months of growth!  Though, thankfully, I read on two separate websites that unlike single births, moms of multiples can expect to slow down in growth for the final 2 months.  So I only expect another 10-15 pounds or so rather than another 20-25.

I think that sums up what we have happening here.  Sorry that I wasn't keeping up with people's comments before.  I wasn't aware that when people made comments they wouldn't be posted until I approved them - and that I would get no notice of the comment to begin with!  Whoops.

27 weeks

ok, so now I'm big. I've gained 19 lbs since my lowest weight (only 4 lbs up since prepreg) and I expect to gain another 20 in the next 13 weeks. My back is pretty unhappy with me, but I am signing up for a class pretty soon to hopefully help with that.

Started sleeping in a recliner to help my back.  Otherwise, not much new and different.

new ultrasounds

So the doctor slipped and told us they were girls... now we know

Here are the ultrasounds from today.  We sure would love a good picture of both their faces, but it is hard when they are in certain positions I guess... twin A has always been scrunched down in my pelvis.  But she's a strong kicker!
